There's nothing wrong with consuming sugar or carbs. The healthiest foods in the world, such as fruits, vegetables, including starchy vegetables and whole grains, contain sugar and carbohydrates.

If you limit your carbohydrate intake you are depriving your cells, which run on glucose. Your body can get its calories from carbohydrates, fat or protein. If you go on a low carb diet, you will need to get your calories from either fat or protein. A high fat diet is not a healthy option, because it decreases insulin sensitivity and causes the diabetes in the first place, and a high protein diet will decrease your longevity and health. So that leaves us with one option for optimum health, and that is a high carb (80-90%), low fat (5-10%), low protein (5-10%) diet. So eat as much as you want of fruit, starchy vegetables and whole grains. You don't have to count calories; just keep the vegetable oils low and cut out the animal products.

Dr Neal Barnard is the world's best at reversing the disease and has conducted his own randomised controlled trials.
